Contracts
A contract exists whether or not you have a written agreement as contracts are made by conduct and in legislation. That being said, from April 2020 employer will have to provide written terms and conditions by day one of employment. Of course, you will want to be legally compliant but there are other practical reasons why written contracts are good for business. We believe a contract should be understood by everyone so we ensure that all contracts are written in plain English.
- A contract sets a good example for your staff if you do things clearly and promptly your staff are more likely to do so too.
- It is not a set of rules for one person only. This means that the contract is as much about what your staff can expect from you as it is about what you can expect from them.
- It can allow you to recoup things such as overpayments and other costs.
- It can protect your business once employment has ended.

Handbooks and Employment policies
Why have an employee handbook when I have contracts?
Contracts should not be excessively long. The reason for this is:
If it is too long you may find that staff do not read it and if it hasn’t been read it is difficult to rely on it.
There are some things which you may need to change more frequently than others as your business changes. This could include bonus and commission policies.
A well-written handbook can set out the values, culture and expectations of both the business and your staff. It is a point of reference for frontline staff and managers and can help your business to promote equality through consistent policies. It is also another opportunity to ensure that your business meets it’s legal requirements.
Essential policies required by Law
By law all businesses with staff must have the following policies:
- Disciplinary
- Grievance
- Health and Safety (if you have over 5 members of staff)
- GDPR
Which is why we have an essential bundle of essential policies and an employment contract for £525 + VAT.
This is perfect if you are just starting to hire people or you haven’t got the cash flow for a full handbook just yet.
Other useful policies
Although there is no legal requirement to have these policies you will find some or all of these useful. Our full handbook can include all of the essential policies and any of these useful policies.
- Uniform and Personal Hygiene
- Alcohol and Drugs
- Right of Search
- Work-Related Social Events
- Absence Management
- Disciplinary and Capability
- Appraisals and Objective Reviews
- Redundancy
- Equal Opportunities
- Personal Relationships At Work
- Harassment and Bullying
- Whistleblowing

- Bribery
- Holiday
- Maternity and family-friendly
- Compassionate Leave and Bereavement Leave
- Social Media
- Technology and Communications

The total cost of a full handbook is £1,590 + VAT.

Managing Persistent Absences and Long Term Illness
There are various reasons why staff are frequently absent or ill for long periods of time. Frequent and long term absences can have a negative effect on the employee who is away but also create a strain on the rest of the team.
It is important for managers to manage absences in a sensitive, not discriminatory way and to balance the requirements of the business.
